Glymphatic System & Light Therapy

The glymphatic system is the brain’s structure for clearing waste products and toxins through the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF). It plays a critical role in removing proteins associated to forms of dementia like amyloid-beta (Aβ), which are closely linked to Alzheimer’s disease. As we age, this system becomes less efficient, leading to a buildup of these harmful proteins. Impairment of the glymphatic system is now recognized as a key contributor to the development and progression of Alzheimer’s, with different regions of the brain affected at different stages of the disease.

Light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, is emerging as a promising, non-invasive approach to support brain health and potentially slow Alzheimer’s and dementia progression. Using specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light, this therapy may enhance blood flow, improve fluid dynamics in the brain, and stimulate cellular activity. Research suggests it may help reduce amyloid-beta accumulation, improve drainage through the glymphatic system, and support overall cognitive function. Targeted light wavelengths are being explored to optimize these effects, though approaches may need to be tailored to each individual depending on their personal health goals or stage of the disease.

At Kemper Cognitive Wellness, light therapy is being incorporated as part of a comprehensive, personalized approach to brain health. By leveraging evidence-based photobiomodulation strategies, the goal is to support the brain’s natural clearance processes, improve circulation, and enhance cognitive performance. This therapy is not used as a standalone treatment but alongside other interventions focused on prevention, early detection, and lifestyle optimization so individuals may take proactive steps to protect and improve their cognitive well-being.
