Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kemper Cognitive Wellness a Functional Medicine Practice?
Yes. Kemper Cognitive Wellness addresses underlying drivers of disease using a systems-oriented approach. We enjoy developing a therapeutic, team-based partnership between client, physician, nutritionist and other practitioners to treat the whole system – not just the symptoms.
What is Scientific Wellness?
Scientific wellness uses data about a person’s genes, proteins and other biology, along with behavioral coaching, to promote greater health and wellness. This approach uses personalized treatments to prevent health problems before they arise, reverse disease transitions, and reduce costs. In short, biological markers are used to tailor wellness treatment to the individual.
Is Dr. Bergman a Neurologist?
No, Dr. Bergman is a geriatrician trained in internal medicine. At Kemper, we may offer a diagnosis, and will refer you to the appropriate physician (ie neurologist or psychiatrist) for formal diagnoses as needed.
Will I work with a Medical Doctor?
Doctors are involved in every client encounter either in person or via client team meetings. Each client case is assessed by a variety of team members to provide you with the best solutions to achieve your health goals in a reasonable timeframe.
Our model of care may be different than what you are accustomed to. Doctors do not often possess the training necessary to assist you with changing your health-related behaviors. In addition to physician care, Kemper Cognitive Wellness utilizes nutrition and health coaches to support achievement of real and lasting change toward health goals
How much will this cost? Can I afford it?
Programs are available to meet almost any budget. Please call 216.337.1400 for programs and pricing.
Does Kemper Cognitive Wellness accept insurance?
We do not accept or bill your insurance, and do not participate as an in-network provider for health plans. Kemper Cognitive Wellness is a fee-for-service medical practice. We accept payment by credit card or check at the time of service. You may also use pre-tax dollars from a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for your consultations and services. Because we work outside the insurance reimbursement system, we are able to partner with you in designing an effective plan that supports your health and wellness goals.
Does Kemper Cognitive Wellness offer Primary Care Services?
No. Our clients continue to receive care from their Primary Care Physician. The Kemper team may collaborate with your Primary Care Physician as needed to further your wellness.
Is Kemper Cognitive Wellness a Concierge Service?
Kemper Cognitive Wellness offers niche services focused on cognitive health and well-being. We are dedicated to co-creating positive changes in our clients’ cognitive wellness, and are committed to addressing the unique needs of each client.
Kemper Cognitive Wellness is not an emergency service, it is not a 24-hour center, and it is not a crisis response center.
How does Functional Medicine and Scientific Wellness help brain health and memory?
Research findings now show that memory loss is not necessarily a genetic disease – lifestyle choices including food, movement, sleep hygiene and stress management all have a profound impact on brain health. Our services will empower you to make positive lifestyle changes and choices that can mitigate other genetic risk factors.
What’s the difference between Functional Medicine and traditional medical practice?
Functional Medicine is a systems biology–based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root cause of disease. It considers the whole person, and looks at all potential drivers of symptoms. Traditional medicine places a strong emphasis on characterizing disorders by diagnosis, reflecting a collection of symptoms or behaviors, rather than the cause of the disorder. Treatment relies heavily on the use of synthetic medications, invasive procedures and surgery. In the United States, traditional medicine is reimbursable by insurance, but isn’t invested in making a person well. Doctors, hospitals, and insurances companies make money when their patients are sick or have sub-par health.
What’s the difference between Functional Medicine and “alternative” or integrative medicine?
Integrative medicine is a model of healthcare in which conventional medicine is integrated with non-conventional or alternative modalities such as herbs, homeopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture.
Kemper Cognitive Wellness may refer clients to non-traditional, evidence-based alternative modalities based on individual needs.
What is ReCODE?
Kemper Cognitive Wellness’ Discovery Protocol is very much informed by Dale Bredesen’s ReCODE Protocol. Dr. Bergman orders an extensive lab panel of over 100 markers, and a number of other diagnostics to assess and treat cognitive decline. The Protocol is comprehensive, the intervention recommendations are highly personalized, and delivered in a paced and sustainable manner. Kemper has several trained ReCODE Practitioners on staff, and offers a ReCODE Report and consultation upon request.
Is there a connection between Kemper Cognitive Wellness and Kemper House?
Kemper Cognitive Wellness and Kemper House are separate entities that share the same founders. The Kemper family has been personally impacted by Alzheimer’s for generations. And, Betty and Kristin envision a world without this disease. That’s why they started Kemper Cognitive Wellness – to help individuals push back against modern day drivers to cognitive decline, and equip them to live better, longer.
