A Breath of Fresh… Microplastics?!

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles smaller than five millimeters that have become an unavoidable part of modern life. They have been detected in the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat. Research from IQAir estimates that the average person may inhale approximately the amount of plastic used to make a credit card over the course of a week! Evidence suggests that excessive exposure to microplastics may contribute to chronic inflammation, hormone disruption, and changes to the gut microbiome. Because brain health depends on healthy blood vessels, balanced hormones, and low levels of inflammation, reducing your exposure to microplastics is becoming an important part of staying healthy.

Although eliminating microplastics entirely is impossible, simple lifestyle changes can meaningfully reduce your exposure.

  • Choose glass or stainless-steel containers instead of plastic – especially for hot foods and beverages, as heat increases the release of plastic particles (think Starbucks & fast food drinks!)
  • Avoid microwaving food in plastic
  • Use a high-quality water filter certified to reduce microplastics
  • Limit heavily processed or packaged foods
  • Consider replacing nonstick cookware with stainless steel or cast iron
  • Choose clothing and bedding made from natural fibers
  • Select plastic-free toiletries and cosmetics

Finally, support your body’s natural detoxification processes with a healthy diet, good hydration, regular exercise, and quality sleep. Habits that you can control to benefit your brain and body!
